José Antonio Escobar (born 1973) is currently one of the most outstanding and versatile classical guitarists worldwide. His perfect balance between his intense musical expression and his vast knowledge of various music styles and periods is always astounding. He was born in Santiago de Chile where he studied from an early age with the renowned lutenist Ernesto Quezada at the Universidad de Chile, graduating with the highest distinction (Summa cum Laude). He was awarded a scholarship by the Chilean Government to study under Prof. Franz Halász, virtuoso German guitarist, at the Hochschule für Musik in Augsburg, where he also worked as Assistant Professor. In order to complement his academic work, he took Ancient Music courses and master classes with distinguished lutenists Hopkinson Smith, Eduardo Egüez, and Juan Carlos Rivera. He has been awarded nearly twenty International Guitar Prizes, including his 1st Prize and Special Audience Prize at the prestigious Francisco Tárrega competition in Benicàssim, Spain in 2000. He has performed in almost all of Europe, the Americas, as well as a few countries in the Middle East and Asia. Also worth mentioning are his performances as a soloist with well-known orchestras in Europe and South America, and in major concert venues. He has completed several recordings for the renowned Naxos label, and for Spanish Radio & Television, in addition to various independently produced recordings. Today, he is frequently invited to perform and give master classes at major festivals, music seminars, and at prestigious universities in countries all over the world.
